This was a friends response to why he hasn't found someone yet. Pretty much sums up how I feel on the topic too. Men are fragile. They won't admit it. Not as fragile as women but self esteem can get bruised quickly. No matter what others say, when you hear "you're like a brother", "I don't want to lose our friendship", "I don't want a relationship right now" and even crap like "I am not good enough for you" time and time again, regardless of what kind of girl they are, you start to believe that the reality is it's you. Deep down there is something wrong with you that no one will ever accept. I find it hard to believe that every girl I have been interested in is so superficial they can't get past my looks. And more and more people now a days want to play the cat and mouse type game when it comes to possible romantic relationships. I don't have time for that. Life is too short and too much can go wrong or has gone wrong for me to play the game. To futilely chase after someone not knowing what they are thinking or if they are just fucking with me. I have come to a decision in my life that it looks like it is just far easier and will hurt less to just stay single. To go about my life and only share it with my closets friends and family. Hell I am 30 and have made it this far without someone beside me. What's another 30, 40 or 50 years?

I am not a racist because I don't like Obama and didn't vote for him. I have nothing against the color of his skin. I think he is a student of socialism and hates America so much that he would see it destroyed in a matter of four years. And here is one for you, I didn't even vote for McCain!
I am not a racist because I think ALL illegal immigrants (not just Mexicans) should be sent back to their home land and made to come here legally. My family is descended from people that immigrated from Europe and the Mediterranean in the early part of the 20th century. They had to adapt to survive and had no problem becoming "American." My sisters nanny was from Jamaica and made the effort to become a legal US citizen. The day she took the oath of citizenship was the happiest day of her life. And isn't it ironic that the countries illegal immigrants come from have tougher immigration laws then we do??
And on these two items let me note that throughout my life and to this day I have had friends and acquaintances of several different races and ethnic backgrounds and never have I looked down on or felt superior to them.
I voted for and support Chris Christie in his efforts to fix the state of New Jersey. I think the NJEA needs to suck it up and jump on the wagon and deal with budget cuts like every other institution in the state whose budget was cut is. It is a crime when a hard working couple that paid off their mortgage four years early have to worry about not being able to pay their taxes because our government can't exercise fiscal responsibility and instead further taxes the private citizen when they feel they need more money.
I only became a Republican/Libertarian because of the childish behavior of the Democratic party and how they have squandered their power since gaining a majority control 5 or 6 years ago. I also turned my back on the Democratic party when I realized they would force me to support every free loading schmuck in the country. I have no problem with organizations that help those in need but it should be help for those who have fallen on hard times, not those who know how to work the system to get everything I have to work for for free or just refuse to earn a damn thing. I cringed at the constant unemployment extensions that kept getting past but now that I am unemployed and dealing with a collapsing economy, I understand why they did it. I also have no problem proving that I am looking for a job. And I have no problem giving my time or money to the better good of humanity but don't you dare force me to by squandering my tax dollars on a bunch of good for nothing freeloaders!
I believe things like Affirmative Action and the ACLU were originally and once good ideas but have become the exact abominations they sought out to prevent. When you get to a point where your purpose begins to benefit one group in particular and cares about ones freedoms over those of others (especially when it is the same right and freedom) you have failed and should find another line of work.
I shudder at where our country is going. I firmly believe we are headed towards either another civil war or (hopefully) a revolution. But I am so tired of keeping quiet while the other side throWs a tantrum and whines and cries and screams and gets their way. Enough is enough!

Um, we now live next to an abandoned home. I mentioned that our next door neighbor was having trouble paying the mortgage so they put the house up for sale. Well it wasn't selling and they weren't getting any interested parties. So about a month ago they decided to move to the third floor of one of their sister's homes. I guess at one point they tried to give it to the bank and the bank wouldn't take it because they owed more then it was worth. So they decided to turn off the gas and water and walk away. Literally packed up a U-Haul and left. It's weird, sitting outside at night smoking a cig and staring at this empty house that someone has lived in since I was a baby. And of course it puts us on edge because now we have to worry about squatters moving in or someone breaking in and stripping the place of anything valuable or who knows what.
I did the initial application for the Master's in Military History program at AMU. I will be concentrating in WWII and going the comprehensive exam route although that may change if I can come up with a thesis (I do have something in mind though it's not so much a thesis as it is a biography). I can't start right away though because when I went to do the FAFSA in order to get money for the current school year I had to provide my 2008 tax information which I don't have easily accessible. So I filed for the 2010-11 school year. In the mean time though I might pay the money out of pocket to take a preliminary research methods in history course.
I haven't been really looking for another job since I made the decision to go back to school. I know deep down I don't have it in me to work a full time job and go to school at the same time. I know I need to get out and at least find a part time job.
On that note I spent several hours tonight registering with various career centers through web sites including NAIS, higheredjobs.com and a couple others plus I know of a couple more I am going to look at tomorrow. I do this because yes I wish I was still working and not home playing referee (though when you started working at age ten, a little break doesn't hurt) and while I wasn't happy with the way things were being run at the farm I never would have walked away from a job unless I had something else lined up. I am doing this more because I know very shortly I am going to have to prove to unemployment that I am not some deadbeat that is looking to live off the government for the rest of my life.
Speaking of referee...I don't know how much longer I can keep my anger and frustration with my parents bottled up. Almost 33 fucking years of marriage and we are still dealing with the same petty bullshit. Mostly my dad which is kind of understandable (depression, anxiety, frustration, tired of struggling, and being unemployed for almost a year, what he saw growing up) but I hate that he talks to my sister about not knowing what to do for my mom and her mental/emotional problems when everything he does is the exact opposite of what he should do. Christ after his heart attack he really turned things around only to go back to the same old Ken Grenci in the last few months. And my mom, christ I have never met another person who can take advice and take advice and do NOTHING with it. I tell her time and time again what she should do to deal with my dad and how to avoid his tantrums and attitude but does she do it? NO! Does she think before she makes a comment like "First I need you to move out of the way" when she should say "Ken, can you please move I need to get at the sink." No, she gets mad because she thinks he purposefully stepped in front of her before she even picked up the counter mat to shake out the crumbs so he could put some stuff in the dishwasher and close it.
And the whole extended family drama keeps playing out. My uncle, my mom's older brother, is a douche. I have realized he has to be one of the most uncaring people I have ever met. I wish I had money, enough to give and live comfortable for ever and never have to worry but I know money can't fix everything. My uncle seems to think that throwing money at a problem will fix it when being a FAMILY would work so much better. Same thing with my other uncle, my mom's younger brother. I think I mentioned that a few months ago. It's recently come out that the marriage between my aunt and uncle that I thought was a story book romance is anything but. And I am sad to think that my aunt who I thought was one of the strongest, most independent women I had ever met is anything but. I would kill myself if I ever did to someone what my uncle did to her. As sad and angry I am over what has happened to my aunt, I can't help but be frustrated when I listen to my aunt talk to my mom about how she was treated and see my mom offer her support and an ear to listen and a shoulder to cry on just to realize that that is how my mom was treated and in some respects is still treated and she had no one to talk to.
Ugh, I don't know...

New Year's Resolution #1
Friday, December 18, 2009
So as I stated we never freaked out over a storm so we never jumped in the car and bought food like we were going to have to survive for two weeks. So it was rather interesting being at the grocery store tonight. It was packed more so then normal and people were just done right rude, especially those pushing carts. At one point I am standing off to the side while my mom went ahead because there was no room to squeeze the cart between the people online and the mom and three kids standing at the freezer picking out ice cream. So I was a little dumbfounded when three people decided to forge ahead of me with their carts. I am not the kind to confront people in public (it's just not something you do in Plainfield) but I was really tempted to blurt out "And where the hell do you think you are going to go?" Seriously, has our society dumbed down that much? I like to think of myself as an abstract thinker, it comes from studying psychology, sociology and the like. But I also think 3 dimensionally. If there is no where to go you might as well put it in park and wait for the path to clear....right??
Oh yea, and I backed into a pole today, while I was turned around to see what was behind me. What the hell is it with me and backing into things?? No damage to the car thank god, maybe a little paint transfer. That would have sucked, we are already down to two cars because dads is in the body shop for at least another two weeks.

Some selections from my favorite Christmas album
The season is upon us now
A time for gifts and giving
And as the year draws to its close
I think about my living
The Christmastime when I was young
The magic and the wonder
But colors dull and candles dim
And dark my standing under
Oh little angel, shining light
You've set my soul to dreaming
You've given back my joy in life
You' ve filled me with new meaning
A savior king was born that day
A baby just like you
And as the Magi came with gifts
I've come with my gift too
That peace on earth fills up your time
That brotherhood surrounds you
That you may know the warmth of love
And wrap it all around you
It's just a wish, a dream I'm told
From days when I was young
Merry Christmas little Zachary
Merry Christmas ev'ryone
Merry Christmas little Zachary
Merry Christmas ev'ryone
"The Peace Carol"
The garment of life, be it tattered and torn
The cloak of the soldier is withered and worn
But what child is this that was poverty-born
The peace of Christmas Day
The branch that bears the bright holly
The dove that rests in yonder tree
The light that shines for all to see
The peace of Christmas Day
The hope that has slumbered for 2000 years
The promise that silenced 1000 fears
A faith that can hobble an ocean of tears
The peace of Christmas Day
The branch that bears the bright holly
The dove that rests in yonder tree
The light that shines for all to see
The peace of Christmas Day
Add all the grief that people may bear
Total the strife, the troubles and care
Put them in columns and leave them right there
The peace of Christmas Day
The branch that bears the bright holly
The dove that rests in yonder tree
The light that shines for all to see
The peace of Christmas Day
The branch that bears the bright holly
The dove that rests in yonder tree
The light that shines for all to see
The peace of Christmas Day
"Noel: Christmas Eve 1913"
A frosty Christmas Eve, when the stars where shining
I traveled for the home, where westward falls the hill
And for many, many a village, in the darkness of the valley
Distant music reached me, peels of bells were ringing.
Then spread my thoughts to olden times, to that first of Christmases
When shepherds who were watching, heard music in the fields
And they sat there and they marveled, and they knew they could not tell
Whether it were angels, or the bright stars a-singing
But to me heard a far, it was starry music
The singing of the angels, the comfort of our Lord
Words of old that come a traveling, by the riches of the times
And I softly listened, as I stood upon the hill
And I softly listened, as I stood upon the hill
"Alfie: The Christmas Tree"
(spoken)
Did you ever hear the story of the Christmas Tree
Who just didn't want to change the show
He liked living in the woods and playing with squirrels
He liked icicles and snow.
He liked wolves and eagles and grizzly bears
And critters and creatures that crawled
Why bugs were some of his very best friends
Spiders and ants and all.
Now that's not to say that he ever looked down
On the vision of twinkling lights
Or on mirrored bubbles and peppermint canes
And a thousand other delights
And he often had dreams of tiny reindeer
And a jolly old man and a sleigh full of toys
And presents and wonderful things
And the story of Christmas Day
Oh, Alfie believed in Christmas all right
He was full of Christmas cheer
All of each and every day
And all throughout the year
To him it was more than a special time
Much more than a special day
It was more than a beautiful story
It was a special kind of way
You see, some folks have never heard a jingle bell ring
And they've never heard of Santa Claus
They've never heard the story of the son of God
And that made Alfie pause.
Did that mean that they'd never know of peace on earth
Or the brotherhood of man
Or know how to love, or know how to give
If they can't...no one can.
You see, life is a very special kind of thing
Not just for a chosen few
But for each and every living breathing thing
Not just me and you
So in your Christmas prayers this year
Alfie asked me if I'd ask you
Say a prayer for the wind, and the water, and the wood
And those who live there, too.

It's In Every one of us to be Wise
Find your heart,
Open up both your eyes.
We can all know everything
Without ever knowing why
It's in every one of us, by and by
It's In Every one of us to be Wise
Find your heart, Open up both your eyes.
We can all know everything
Without ever knowing why
It's in every one of us, by and by
By and by.

If God invited us all to a table and told us to put our problems on the table before us and look at everyone's problems, we'd take our own and go home
With the cluster fuck that is my extended family these days I didn't think I could be thankful for family. But I think about the people that have welcomed us into their homes over the last couple of weeks and years when my own family choose to turn their backs on us. I realized that blood doesn't necessarily mean family.
I am thankful for friends. I am thankful for those that bother to give two shits. Difficult times are guaranteed to reveal to you one thing...who your real friends are. It is difficult knowing there are those that know I am back home and going through some hard times and haven't bothered to pick up the damn phone. But there are a few that I can count on when it matters.
I am thankful for my health. Even though there are times I look at myself in the mirror and hate what I see physically, I could be suffering from a rare form of cancer like my aunt's sister. But I am not.
And I am thankful for my sister. Without her sometimes I don't know what I would do. Without knowing it she gives me purpose.

The rollercoaster that is life...
Monday, November 23, 2009
Despite what I thought he would do dad e-mailed SUNY Plattsburgh this morning. Actually at this point it might as well be yesterday morning. They informed him they are still doing on campus interviews. WTF?? Five weeks ago he was told a decision would be made by Thanksgiving. Here we are two days from Thanksgiving and they are telling him they are still interviewing. I mean it is good to know that he is still in the running and I am grateful for the somewhat good news but come on already!!
Anyway, I am laying in my bed right now. It is 2:50 in the morning. I am sick which is great. I started to feel a little off late Sunday night and woke up Monday morning feeling like garbage. I am hoping it is just a mild cold that my parents bounced around for about a month and not something worse. I will just keep popping the zicam and hope for the best.
It looks to be a busy few days. Tuesday I have to run to the store, possibly help put a window in and pack up some stuff to take to my sisters. Wednesday I have to work on my car to get ready for the trip, pack some more and help dad if we don't get to the window Tuesday and the weather holds out. Thursday I will pack the car, we are going to dinner at my aunt's sisters house and I will head to Newport from there. I anticipate leaving between 9 and 10 and getting to Newport somewhere between 2 and 3 in the morning. It's not as bad as it sounds. I am a night person anyway and prefer to drive long distances at night when the roads are empty. It will give me some time to think about stuff and reflect on things and talk out loud without someone saying "what did you say". It's weird but I think things through better when I can talk to myself out loud instead of talking to myself in my head.
After this weekend I get to turn my attention toward Christmas and New Year's. I really hope I can find something to do on New Year's Eve. I am sure I will be invited to the Greco's but as much as I love the Greco's I don't enjoy going to their house for get togethers as much as I did. Its probably because now that I am back home I am with my parents every waking minute and the thought of going to a get together with them makes me want to drink myself stupid just a little bit. At the Greco's, no one is my age. They are either ten years younger then me or in their forties and beyond. I really want to find something to do with friends and people my own age. Otherwise I may just sit at home and watch movies by myself. Ok, that was a tad more depressing then I wanted it to be.
Anyway, it's after 3 and I am starting to fall asleep on my keyboard. Here is hoping I sleep well and wake up feeling a little better then I do now.

What I am having a problem being patient with is my dad. It has been what now, three weeks (??), and no call. They said they wanted to hire someone by Thanksgiving which is in a week. So they still have a week but damn I wish they would call already. I really want him to get this job, partly because it will mean good things for my family and partly for selfish reasons. Little by little my dad is becoming more intolerable because of his attitude and depression. I know he is anxious to know if he got the job but as usual he takes it out on the wrong people. He always has and unfortunately he probably always will. I also don't even want to think about what Christmas will be like if he doesn't get the job and Kate doesn't come home or we don't go see her, etc. I need this Christmas to be happy because I didn't enjoy it last year. At least tier 3 unemployment has been approved and my mom was smart with her last few unemployment checks and will qualify for the extension. At least that'll mean there will be money to pay for Christmas (sounds shallow I know).
Mom was sworn in Tuesday as a CASA volunteer. It was a nice ceremony and I got the opportunity to learn a little about the organization. It seems like something I could do at some point but not right now when I am going to go back to school and have decided I am going to need to get a part time job after the first of the year.
Speaking of the first of the year, I have started giving some thought to what my resoulution('s) are going to be. I am not going to go with the stereotypical crap (get active, eat better, etc.). The get active part I am trying to do now anyway. One thing I want in the new year that I have never had is a date on Valentine's Day. Seems small but I have come to realize it is the little things that matter the most.
Anyway, Newport in a little over a week away. I am thinking about driving up late Thursday night depending on what time we get home from Thanksgiving dinner, if we go out. I know it will be a fun weekend but I am keeping my fingers crossed for a good birthday since it is a milestone and the first time I will be able to actually celebrate my birthday in a few years.

...land of the free BECAUSE of the brave...
They were citizen soldiers. Men who heard the call of God and country, and one can argue the world, to serve the better good. They would have given their lives if it was asked, and my one grandfather very nearly did when the plane he was on was shot down and ditched in the ocean while my grandfather had a very heavy metal briefcase full of payroll handcuffed to his wrist.
Soldiers now-a-days have more against them then ever. They are asked to fight for and defend a country that has forgotten how precious freedom and liberty is. And when they fall in defense of their country, there are those that would stand outside of their funerals and yell horrible things at their greaving families and hold signs up stating they got what they deserve. It is wrong for us to condemn them because of the decisions the politicians WE vote into office make.
I am not a warmonger. I would love to see the day where war is replaced with peaceful words and tolerance of others. But unfortunately there are those in this world that would have their way through violence, oppression and death. That is why we need these men and women who unselfishly give their lives to defend those that can not.
So remember the men and women that have served and continue to serve, not just on this day, but everyday. Freedom isn't free...

I truly believe that I am much better right now then I was this time last year. I still wonder why I had to lose my job and even though I wasn't happy I never would have left without having another job. I just know I am in a much better mindset not having all the stress and frustration I had at CFS. Being home is OK. Not as bad as I thought it would be. I would like to change a couple of things: I wish dad was working, he is such a bear not having something to focus on, working on the house helps but no matter how much he says he is tired of the rat race he needs to work a job; I wish mom would finish getting her stuff out of my room so I could finally get serious about moving some of my furniture from PA into my room and finally get around to unpacking the boxes I have in my room; I am figuring out how much it will cost comcast to put a second cable connection in my room so I can have some privacy and not spend all day around my parents; I am paying rent, and I really wish my parents would treat me more like a tenant then their son; and I wish more people would want to get together with me. Which leads to my next topic.
Alot of my friends aren't around anymore. Some have moved away, some are still away at school. But most that are still around have a couple things in common. They are married or in a serious relationship or having a kid or having a second kid. I feel like everytime I turn around someone is getting married or having a kid. So few people I know are still single or not expecting. I just wish someone would pick up the phone and call.
I am going to be 30 in less than a month. I didn't expect to be married by this point in my life but I thought I would at least be in a serious relationship by now. My mom was 26 when I was born and my dad was 29. I mean at least financially I am not ready for a committed relationship or to be engaged or married and trying to plan a family but I really don't think I want to wait too much longer (i.e. five years or so). And b-t-dub, I am going to be in Newport for my birthday (heading up Friday after Thanksgiving, my birthday is Sunday the 29th). I would love if some of my friends made the trip up to party with me but it's not really a big deal, I will be getting together with some people I know up there.
Right now school is a priority. If I am ever going to go back now is the time. So this weekend I am going to sit down and fill out the online application for AMU and see what happens. If I get in I won't necessarily start right away but I need to do it soon so I can fill out the FAFSA forms. I am going to apply to the masters in military history program, concentration in WWII. A masters is enough to teach on the college level depending on the school. If not I can write, work for any number of historical societys, who knows what else.
And speaking of my dad, he was flown up to SUNY Plattsburgh two weeks ago for an interview. We are really hoping he gets this job and he should get word by early next week at the latest I would hope. It would solve a lot of problems for my parents. First my dad is just about done with the outside house repairs he wanted to do. If he gets this job we can afford to have someone come in and finish the work he can't do or doesn't want to do. Two Plattsburgh has the potential to be a place my parents could comfortably retire in. Three if he gets the job my parents would have some time apart and with both of them being out of work (my mom intentionally, my dad, not so much) I think they have been in each others hair WAY more then they would like. If he gets the job it will be at least 9 to 11 months before we move. Four my parents can't afford to live here anymore, let alone retire at some point. We all love NJ. I don't care what anyone says, NJ is a great place. So much to do, so much history and so much more then just an industrial wasteland (which if more of you would go half an hour west of the parkway you would realize that). And I would go with them because at this point, short of getting serious with someone before then, I would have no choice but to go with them.
Anyway, I really can't think of anything else to write right now. I am sure I will come back to these topics over the coming weeks and months.
And my next door neighbors put their house on the market. The lease on one of their cars was up and they didn't get another one. They are moving into one of their siblings houses. God I hope Christie turns things around in this state...
